One man in particular is the sheriff, who was already a jealous man and lusted after everything He had - even his pretty wife. The Sheriff brokered a deal with the same alcohol suppliers and also seized the opportunity to take the widow for himself through blackmail. The Sheriff, even on his worst days, was as good a detective as he was terrible inside and could just as easily arrest her for murder if she said no - he already has all the evidence.
